  • 1 pound ground beef Use lean ground beef to cut down on excess grease.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) baked beans Canned baked beans are the base of this recipe.
  • 1/3 cup ketchup Can be replaced with barbecue sauce for a twist.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed Adds sweetness to balance flavors.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Adjust to taste.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brown the ground beef with the diced onion and minced garlic in a skillet over medium heat for about 7 to 8 minutes until the beef is cooked through and the onion is soft.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked beef mixture with the baked beans, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Stir until everything is well coated. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
Baking
  1. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is lightly caramelized and the edges are bubbly.
Serving
  1. Let the baked beans rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use lean ground beef to cut down on grease. Don’t skip the covered baking stage for best flavor melding. This dish can be made ahead and reheats well, and can also be varied with different sauces or proteins.
