Ingredients
  

For the beef filling
  • 1 pound ground beef You can choose lean ground beef.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For cooking the beef.
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Alternatively, use 2 tablespoons of homemade seasoning.
  • 2/3 cup water To moisten the filling.
For the fried dough shells
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour For making the dough.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder To help the dough rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil To enrich the dough.
  • 3/4 cup milk For moisture in the dough.

For the toppings
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce For freshness.
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes For a juicy addition.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add your ground beef. Break it apart as it cooks and drain excess fat.
  2. Add taco seasoning and water into the skillet with the beef, stirring until evenly coated. Let it simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add vegetable oil and milk, stirring until a soft, sticky dough forms.
  4. Divide dough into four portions and roll each into thin circles on a floured surface.
Cooking
  1. Heat about an inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry each round of dough for 1 to 2 minutes per side until puffed and golden.
  3. Drain on paper towels and fold each warm shell into a chalupa shape.
Assembly
  1. Fill each shell with seasoned beef and layer with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and sour cream.
  2. Serve immediately while shells are still warm and crispy.

Ensure even dough thickness for frying, and serve immediately to prevent sogginess. Variations include chicken chalupa, spicy beef, BBQ, vegetarian, or breakfast options.
