Preparation
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add your ground beef. Break it apart as it cooks and drain excess fat.
- Add taco seasoning and water into the skillet with the beef, stirring until evenly coated. Let it simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
- In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add vegetable oil and milk, stirring until a soft, sticky dough forms.
- Divide dough into four portions and roll each into thin circles on a floured surface.
Cooking
- Heat about an inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry each round of dough for 1 to 2 minutes per side until puffed and golden.
- Drain on paper towels and fold each warm shell into a chalupa shape.
Assembly
- Fill each shell with seasoned beef and layer with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and sour cream.
- Serve immediately while shells are still warm and crispy.
Notes
Ensure even dough thickness for frying, and serve immediately to prevent sogginess. Variations include chicken chalupa, spicy beef, BBQ, vegetarian, or breakfast options.
