Ingredients

For the Blackberry Sauce
  • 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed Ripe blackberries enhance the flavor; frozen blackberries work well too.
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar Adjust sweetness based on the tartness of the blackberries.
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp lemon extract Do not substitute with lemon juice; the extract provides better flavor.
For the Dumplings
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar Can be omitted for a more savory dumpling.
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg Adds warmth and flavor; do not skip.
  • 2/3 cup milk

Method

Make the Blackberry Sauce
  1. Combine rinsed blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract in a pot. Heat over medium until it comes to a gentle boil. Stir occasionally and let simmer for 8-10 minutes until slightly thickened.
Mix the Dumpling Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Add milk and stir until combined, being careful not to overmix.
Drop the Dumplings into the Sauce
  1. Reduce blackberry sauce to a low simmer and drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the sauce, spaced out to allow expansion.
Cover and Cook
  1. Cover the pot and cook the dumplings for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. Check for doneness with a toothpick; if needed, cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Ladle the blackberries and dumplings into bowls, ensuring a good portion of sauce accompanies each serving. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Keep the lid on while cooking for best results. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
