Method
Preparation
- Decide whether to grill or bake, and preheat accordingly. For grilling, heat to high and for baking, preheat to 450°F.
- Tear off four large pieces of heavy-duty foil, about twelve inches by eighteen inches each.
Building the Apple Filling
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine diced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves. Stir until well coated.
Making the Crumble Topping
- In another bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add cold butter and mix until the texture becomes coarse and clumpy.
Assembling the Foil Packs
- Divide the apple mixture among the four foil sheets. Top each with crumble topping, then fold the foil tightly around each pack.
Cooking
- Place foil packs on the grill for 7 to 9 minutes or bake on a baking sheet for 15 to 18 minutes.
- Check for doneness by opening one pack; apples should be soft and topping should be set.
Finishing Touches
- Let the packs rest for two minutes. Carefully open and drizzle with salted caramel and add optional toppings before serving.
Notes
Use heavy-duty foil to prevent tearing. Dice apples uniformly for even cooking. Do not overfill the packs for easier sealing.
