Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish by lightly greasing it.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground meat, breaking it into small crumbles, for about 6 to 8 minutes until fully cooked.
- Drain any excess grease to avoid a greasy casserole.
- Add diced onion to the skillet and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the pizza sauce and add Italian seasoning, oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Stir well and season with salt and black pepper. Let simmer for 5 minutes.
Assembly
- Pour the meat sauce into the greased baking dish and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella over the meat sauce.
- Layer the toppings: pepperoni, green pepper, mushrooms, black olives, and banana peppers evenly over the cheese.
- Top it off with the remaining mozzarella and all of the Parmesan, then arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top.
- Sprinkle Italian seasoning over the tater tots.
Baking
- Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes until the tater tots are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Check at 25 minutes; if the tots are brown but the center is undercooked, tent with foil and continue baking.
Serving
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
Notes
Use full-fat cheese for better melting. Storage: Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days. To reheat, bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes.
