Ingredients

Fruits
  • 1 cup strawberries, tops removed Choose bright red strawberries without white shoulders.
  • 1 cup cantaloupe, cut into 1-inch cubes Select a sweet-smelling cantaloupe.
  • 1 cup pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes Pineapple should have a tropical smell.
  • 1/2 cup kiwi, peeled and cut into thick slices Select ripe kiwis that give slightly to pressure.
  • 1/2 cup red grapes Use firm grapes that cling to their stems.
  • 1/2 cup blackberries Use firm, ripe blackberries.
  • 12 pieces wooden or metal skewers For kids, trim sharp tips off wooden skewers.

Method

Preparation
  1. Wash and dry all fruits. Rinse under cold water and gently rub strawberries and grapes to clean.
  2. Remove green tops from strawberries and cut large ones in half. Cut cantaloupe and pineapple into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Peel kiwi and cut into thick rounds, about 1/2 inch wide.
Assembling Skewers
  1. Thread fruit onto skewers in a rainbow order: red grape, blackberry, kiwi, pineapple, cantaloupe, and strawberry.
  2. Leave an inch of skewer for a handle and press the fruit close together.
  3. Continue assembling until all 12 skewers are finished.
Serving
  1. Arrange the skewers on a serving platter and serve immediately or chill in the fridge until ready to serve.

Notes

Chill the skewers before serving for the best texture. You can make these up to 24 hours ahead and store in the fridge. Avoid using very ripe fruits like peaches as they can become mushy.
