Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet work best) Yukon Gold provides a creamy texture while Russets hold their shape.
  • 3 large leeks, cleaned and sliced Fresh, firm leeks are essential.
  • 2 cups heavy cream This creates a rich flavor throughout the gratin.
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese Use freshly grated cheese for optimal melting.
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese Grate fresh for better texture.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For sautéing the leeks.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Adds flavor to the sautéed leeks.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste Season to your preference.
  • Fresh thyme, for garnish (optional) Adds freshness when serving.
Optional Add-Ins
  • 1 cup cooked bacon or pancetta For a smoky kick.
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg For added warmth.
  • Chopped parsley or chives For a fresh garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Clean and slice the leeks. Soak the sliced leeks in cold water to remove dirt.
  2. Slice the potatoes about 1/8 inch thick, optionally peeling them for a smoother taste.
  3. Melt butter in a skillet, add leeks and minced garlic, and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until soft.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Layering and Baking
  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Start layering with sliced potatoes, then leeks, followed by the cream mixture, and a sprinkling of cheeses. Repeat the layers.
  2. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden.
  3. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing the gratin.

Notes

Slice potatoes uniformly for even cooking. Use freshly grated cheese for best melting results. Let the gratin rest to keep slices intact.
